Drive window wont stay open windows xp

Once this occurs, the partition boot sector takes over and begins loading Windows. If the master boot record is corrupt, the partition boot sector can't do its job and Windows won't boot. If you suspect Windows XP won't boot because the master boot record has been corrupted, you can use the Recovery Console tool Fixmbr to fix it.

For example, the device pathname format for a standard bootable drive C configuration would look like this:. When Windows XP encounters a fatal error, the default setting for handling such an error is to automatically reboot the system. If the error occurs while Windows XP is booting, the operating system will become stuck in a reboot cycle--rebooting over and over instead of starting up normally. In that case, you'll need to disable the option for automatically restarting on system failure.

When Windows XP begins to boot up and you see the message Please select the operating system to start or hear the single beep, press [F8] to display the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Now, Windows XP will hang up when it encounters the error and with any luck, it will display a stop message you can use to diagnose the problem.

If you can't seem to repair a Windows XP system that won't boot and you have a recent backup, you can restore the system from the backup media. The method you use to restore the system will depend on what backup utility you used, so you'll need to follow the utility's instructions on how to perform a restore operation. If you can't repair a Windows XP system that won't boot and you don't have a recent backup, you can perform an in-place upgrade.

Doing so reinstalls the operating system into the same folder, just as if you were upgrading from one version of Windows to another.

An in-place upgrade will usually solve most, if not all, Windows boot problems. This screen will prompt you to press R to repair the selected installation or to press [Esc] to install a fresh copy of Windows XP. In reply to Brooklyn32's post on July 26, It might be time for Windows 7 or Linux. In reply to Wunders's post on July 26, Well, I can easily restore the machine to as-factory-shipped.

The recovery partition is still intact and functional, plus I actually made a recovery disk set when I got the machine in the first place. But, neither of those will let me "repair" the current installation, only overwrite it with a bunch of old, obsolete stuff.

I've already recovered several hundred of my data files. But, I have wizardly ambitions. I want to wave my magic wand and boot this machine back to life the way it was or as nearly possible to before it crashed.

One thing you did not do is tell us what "crashed" means to you and what "eaten its System file" means. It doesn't make sense to start copying files around on a system with a corrupted file system.

But, sometimes when Wunders suggests using the RRW first, it seems to work, but I would never start with that since if the file system is corrupted, things might get worse I think.

Wunders :- Wunders is a knowledgeable volunteer - no question about that, but now you have been running all these other tools that I have never used to fix the aforementioned problem. What happens when you try to boot now? Let chkdsk finish and correct any problems it might find. When the chkdsk runs clean, remove the CD and restart your system. I must say that I agree with ElderL at this point. While we may have minor differences of opinion in order of approaches, they are both sound and based on probabilities of occurrence and effect.

Your non-standard or infected MBR message would be hint enough to me to get a clean start with a reformat and restore to factory default followed by a restore from backup. Your situation is at the point IMHO where you will find yourself spending an inordinate amount of time to find a "magic wand" and even if you find it, you still will be unsure that you wouldn't have a lingering root-kit or other infection on your machine.

Restoring to factory default can be done in an hour or two and restoring files from backup and applying updates can be done in a day or two. So you could have been back to normal in the time that this thread has been lingering. First off, why does this issue happen in the first place? There are essentially two main causes of windows that refuse to stay up. One possibility is that the one, or both, balances of the window have become disconnected from the sash.

Either way, it is important to have a professional fix this issue before it becomes a safety hazard in your home. After merging the registry file you may need to restart your system, so that the changes can reflect. Note: If still after following the above you are not able to solve the problem then update your antivirus and run a complete scan and make your system virus free.

Click here to scan with Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool. I would try both the methods in a short while from now. I dont expect complete recovery from the method expalined though. Could any body explain me why this problem gets originated. I would stop using the product altogether.

The extent to which the virus has damaged the computer varies. Though this solution works for some cases, it may not work for some. In such case, try update your anti-virus definitions and run a full system scan, that mat help.

None of the methods given r working ……. Hi, I had that problem, but I used my Antivirus Kaspersky 7. I have Pc with windows XP-sp2. My pc is infected by worm. How can i remove this virus from my PC. After infected my PC shows one of name is chalange folder is created in all drives. How can i clean the virus from my data. Please help me to solve this problem.

Change the value data of this entry to: 1 Close Registry Editor. I tried your fix and it seemed like it worked initially but after a restart the issue appears to have resurfaced. I have tried it numerous times since and it no longer seems to work. I was wondering if anyone else has had the issue resurface? Is there any other way around it?

Would booting in safe mode and attempting your fix work? Any bit of help would help right about now. We have just compiled small registry file, which you need to download and merge into your system registry, the post has been updated. My computer too was having the same problem until, I applied your solution. Have to check if this is working fine. I hope that it does. Wanted to know how can one debug such problems by their own.

How to identify these problems. I think solution is not a big deal if we understand the actual problem. Initially my hard drives stopped opening, i resolved the issue by your method, its all fine.

Suppose i load a Dvd whose name is lethal weapon , the disc shows as cd rom now. If i reboot the computer it starts reading the dvd in drive properly.
